Artificial intelligence can aid in the design of physical objects and processes. This is in contrast to the
common use of AI for classification, autonomous vehicles, machine vision, or NLP. In design though, we
still have big data problems and still need deep learning, deep reinforcement learning, and other
analytic tools.

In all design tasks, there is a large multidimensional space where each dimension represents a range of
choices and each point is a possible design. Each design has an estimated utility, and we want to search
for the most useful design. In simple cases, we can use commonly available optimization tools. In
complex cases, like designing an aircraft engine, we need humans or AI.

Joel David Martin will introduce work designing photonic components, quantum devices, and chemical processes.
